About Us

On April 26, 2021, two concerned citizens met to discuss continuing the work of a 2005 group to help preserve the Maynard Colored School, a Rosenwald School built in 1920–21.

On May 13 of that year, an exploratory meeting was held with invited citizens for deeper discussion. This resulted in the formation of the Allen County African American Heritage Council, Incorporated, whose focus expanded beyond the preservation of the school.

In December 2021, through an action of the Allen County Fiscal Court, the Council was recognized as a county organization.

The Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity that welcomes people of all races to help record and spotlight Allen County's rich African American history.
